PFEIFFER CANYON BRIDGE – EMERGENCY BRIDGE REPLACEMENT IN BIG SUR, CA.

Project Highlights and Details:

  • Heavy rains caused the Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge on Hwy. 1 in Big Sur to collapse due to ground movement.  Golden State Bridge, Inc. and Caltrans implemented a plan to replace the structure with a single span steel bridge.  Due to the severe impact to the community, a new bridge was constructed in record time through innovative design and collaboration.
  • Key Features: The new, 310-foot, single-span steel girder bridge was designed without support columns in the canyon to eliminate future vulnerability to slide activity.
  • Construction Speed: Completed in just eight months—opening in October 2017—a timeline significantly faster than the anticipated eight years for conventional construction.
  • Methodology: 15 steel girders, weighing 62 tons each and fabricated in Vallejo, were used. The project involved advanced planning, accelerating the design, and a unique “launching” technique to move the girders into place.
  • Contractor: The prime contractor for this $24 million project was Golden State Bridge, Inc.
The replacement bridge restored access to the southern end of Big Sur, which had been isolated for months. The project was recognized for its rapid, emergency construction techniques.
